Training on a GLP-1

Lose the weight. Keep the muscle.

If you're on Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound, the weight is coming off. Good. This page is about the part your prescriber may not have had time to cover.

A lot of what you lose isn't fat.

In the trial that got semaglutide approved for weight loss, the sub-group who had body scans lost roughly 40% of their total weight as lean tissue, not fat.1 Lean tissue is muscle, mostly. It's the stuff that gets you up a flight of stairs, off the floor, and down a ski run in March without your knees filing a complaint.

Nobody is telling you to stop the medication. I'm telling you what to do while you're on it.

What we do about it

Two things, both in the same hour, both included in the fee.

Strength training, two sessions a week, built around whatever your body's history is. A meniscus, a disc, a shoulder that hasn't been the same since 2019. That history is most of who I train, and it's why the program is built around the joint rather than around avoiding it.

Nutrition coaching. Appetite on a GLP-1 drops hard, and the first thing most people stop eating enough of is protein. I hold a Certificate IV in Nutrition Coaching and it comes with every session. We work out what enough looks like for you, in food you'll eat, with no separate appointment and no separate bill.

The goal is simple: when you step off the scale at the end, the number is lower and the person standing on it is stronger.

Who this is for

You're on a GLP-1, or about to start one, and you'd like the weight that comes off to be fat. You may be over 40, 50 or 60. You may have a knee or a back you've been managing for years. You may never have lifted a weight in your life. All three are normal here.

This is not a weight-loss program and I am not your prescriber. Medication decisions stay with your doctor. What happens to your muscle while you take it is a training and food problem, and that's mine.

How a session runs

Your first visit is a 30-minute assessment, $57, in the studio or on Zoom. I watch you move, find the one change that helps most, and you feel it before you leave. Then I tell you plainly whether I can help.

After that: 60 minutes or 30, one-on-one, in the studio at 1800 Glenarm Place in downtown Denver or on Zoom from wherever you are. $200 for 60 minutes, $110 for 30. Same price either way.

What people on a GLP-1 notice first

Energy in sessions is lower in the first weeks; we program for that. Strength comes back faster than you expect once protein is sorted. Clothes fit differently before the scale moves much, because muscle is denser than fat. Results vary from person to person.

"Jamie has been my trainer for 3 1/2 years. I came to him as a 60 something woman who had never been on a workout routine. He has transformed me into a lean, mean work out machine. I am in the best shape of my life. He excels in targeted therapies. If your hip is giving you pain, he has specific exercises to relieve the pain. Joint or spine issues, he has a solution. My workouts address weight training for strength, balance, stretching and Pilates. He excels in creating individual work outs that give results. I highly recommend him as a trainer if you need rehabilitation or just need to get into shape."

Bottom line: the medication takes weight off. Only training decides what kind.

Questions people on a GLP-1 ask

Do I need to stop the medication to train?

No. Whether you take it, and for how long, is between you and your prescriber. What happens to your muscle while you take it is a training and food problem, and that is the part I handle.

How much protein should I be eating?

It is individual, and appetite on a GLP-1 makes it harder than the number suggests. We set your target in the assessment and adjust it as the weight comes off. Nutrition coaching is included in every session.

Can I do this on Zoom?

Yes. Online sessions are full 30- or 60-minute training sessions, same price, same program, with the food side handled the same way.

Thirty minutes. One measurable change. Then you decide.

A 30-minute assessment, $57, in the studio or on Zoom. If it's not a fit I'll say so in the first half hour, and I'll know who is.
